Workers in Bulgarian coal mines fear the closure of their pits after it was announced that the operation of several coal-fired power plants will be reduced to minimum capacity and might even be closed. The three coal-fired power plants of the Maritsa Istok complex in Southeastern Bulgaria are the largest power plants of that type on the Balkans, although other facilities like the one in Bobov Dol near Sofia are affected as well.
