Several hundred employees of correctional facilities in Bulgaria gathered in front of the Ministry of Justice in Sofia today to voice their anger about their working conditions. Prison guards have to buy their own handguns and other essential equipment and each guard is responsible for over 100 inmates.

The top official of the department of correctional facilities in Bulgaria has a monthly salary of BGN 700 (€ 357/£ 289/US$ 447), guards and other staff earn even less. Salaries for prison guards in Bulgaria have not been raised for the last ten years.
