This image from my project ‘Industrial Ruins in Bulgaria’ shows the largest of them all: the Kremikovci Steel Plant northeast of Sofia.

The Kremikovci Steel Plant should have been the pride of communist Bulgaria’s heavy industry after it was built in the late 1950s. But it never ran with full capacity and turned into one of the biggest polluters of air and water in the country instead. The plant was sold last year for a token price after a series of not really transparent transactions to privatize it.
I took this shot in April last year while the farming tractors were plowing the fields that surround this gigantic structure.
