Early spring (or late winter?) in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains…

While down in Sofia the flowers are out, the birds are twittering in the trees and the temperature already hits the 20-mark regularly, spring is still a long way off in the Rila Mountains. The lake in the image is the Belmeken reservoir at about 1850 meters, the cloud-covered peaks in the background to the right are the Rhodopi Mountains.
Half of the lake is still covered in ice and snow is up to two meters deep on the hills. The drop in temperature is also pretty steep: 18 degrees in Sofia, 7 on Belmeken lake, with a stiff wind blowing that made my eyes water.
Given a day of fine weather I will be up on one of those peaks as soon as I can…
