On the Sigma USA website, the well-known producer of third party lenses, published new information on its new 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM lens yesterday.

What seems to be an ideal choice for portrait photographers or anybody demanding excellent low-light performance might want to have a closer look at the new Sigma “World Class Glass” (manufacturer’s description). While most statements are confirmed by independent reviewers like The-Digital-Picture.com, the lens seems to have an issue with its AF (inconsistent focusing).

In case your subject does not move around or run away, you can avoid these issues by using MF. The focus ring provides nice manual focusing, the lens has a distance window and depth-of-field markings (although only for f/16). Build and image quality make this lens worth considering for a portrait or landscape photographer, but if you are a photojournalist you might want to look for something with better AF-performance.

A detailed review is available here.

However, compared to its closest competitors the lens is quite affordable with a price several hundred Euro (Dollar, Pound) lower than the (manual-focus) Zeiss 85mm f1.4 and less than half the price of the Canon 85mm f1.2 L II USM.

Also on its U.S. website, Sigma has placed a teaser for “The Hottest Sigma Technology For 2012 Revealed”, showing the image of a zoom ring on a lens and the writing “Optical Stabilizer”. Maybe we are in for a Sigma lens with a new stabilizer. Check back on the Sigma website on 10 January for more.
