In preparation for several upcoming articles about the strike of railway workers in Bulgaria I used a couple of hours yesterday to do a photo shoot near the Sofia Central train station.
Unfortunately, taking photographs in Bulgarian train stations is not widely approved by the authorities. In good old communist tradition, the approach in this country is, that the journalist is to be blamed for whatever he uncovers. So shooting decaying railway infrastructure is not a way to make friends among the ‘nomenklatura’.
Fortunately I know a couple of loopholes in the fence around the station and so I went on a little raconnaissance trip and found rust-covered switches, rotting carriages and overgrown tracks amid piles of rubbish: a depressing sight.
